Frequently Asked Questions for Laser Hair Removal

Which sites can be treated?

It is possible to treat hair at practically any body site. Common sites for treatment on Women include the lip & Chin, under-arms, bikini line and lower legs. Common sites for laser hair removal on men include the chest, back and shoulders.  The cost of treatment is directly proportional to the size of area treated as more laser shots will be required. At the clinic we offer packages of treatment.

Are there side-effects of laser therapy?

All laser systems produce mild discomfort in the skin at the time of treatment and some mild redness that takes a few hours to settle. Occasionally, topical anaesthetic cream is used. The Lumenis laser has a cooling treatment head and we also combine this with cooling gel to minimise heating of the upper surface layers of the skin. Side-effects can include brown pigmentation of treated areas and rarely scarring. Pigmentation problems will normally resolve after a few months of treatment. We advise all patients to refrain from sun-exposure during treatment.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a popular and semi-permanent method for treating unwanted hair around the body and facial area. At the clinic we use the very latest in laser technology to selectively destroy the growing hair follicles, which typically results in a significant reduction of hair growth following a course of treatment.

We always aim to provide you with a course of treatment with the same practitioner. and our service is fully supported by a consultant dermatologist and medical practitioners. How many treatment sessions are required?

The number of treatment sessions required for each body site varies according to differences in hair growth, density, colour and skin colour. It can also vary according to the type of laser used, which is why we use one of the best lair hair removal devices on the market, a Cyonsure Elite laser.

Several treatment sessions are normally required at regular intervals of 4-8 weeks. This is because at any given time only a small proportion of your hairs are in the growing phase of development, and so multiple sessions are required for the laser to effectively destroy all of the hairs in the area. The typical number of treatment sessions required are as follows:

Bikini Line / Underarm 4-6 sessions

Upper Lip / Chin / Face 8-10 sessions

Chest / Back / Legs 8-12 sessions

What happens during the first consultation?

During your consultation we will assess the area and explain the treatment in detail. This will include a discussion about the likely results, number of sessions required and expected costs.

We may also offer to do a small test patch to assess the response to the laser and to monitor for side-effects. Please ensure that you have avoided sun-exposure for 4-weeks prior to the appointment and please do bring a friend with you if you feel embarassed or anxious.

What does treatment involve?

After a quick chat with one our practitioners you will be asked to lie comfortably on a treatment couch. Your skin will then be shaved and you will be asked to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes. The practitioner will then proceed to treat the area with the laser, and will use a cooling gel or cold air to keep you comfortable. Treatment typically takes 20-60 mins depending on the size of the area to be treated, and afterwards we will provide you with some after-care information to take away with you.

Can I receive treatment?

We will not be able to treat you if you have had recent sun exposure or a sun-tan. You will also need to stop treatment if you become pregnant or if you start using certain medications.

How long does it last?

Laser hair removal is considered to be a semi-permanent method of hair removal, but the length of time before hair starts to grow back varies a lot between individuals. For some patients it can be highly effective, lasting for many years, whilst others may require regular top up treatments or may find only a reduction in hair growth depending on how well their body responds to treatment.

What after-care is required?

Very little after-care is typically required post-treatment, although it is essential to wear a high factor sunblock (SpF >25) for 4-6 weeks. A cool pack may also be necessary if the treated area feels warm or uncomfortable. You may continue with your normal skin care regime immediately after each treatment session.

Are there any side-effects?

All laser hair removal systems produce mild pain and discomfort during treatment. Skin redness and mild swelling can also develop for a few hours and occasionally last a few days. Most patients experence few problems providing that they avoid sun-exposure for 4-weeks pre and post treatment. However, a small percentage of patients can get side-effects such as burning, brown pigmentation, and very rarely scarring.

Side-effects are more common in darker skin types because the dark melanin pigment absorbs the laser energy more readily. This is always explained during your consultation and any risks will be discussed in detail with you. We can never guarantee treatment to be side-effect free but do work hard to minimise any risks in everyone that we see.
