How does it work?
The laser destroys hairs by selectively targeting the dark black pigment present in hair follicles. This pigment is called melanin and is responsible for giving hair and skin its natural colour. When the laser is fired, the laser light penetrates the skin and gets rapidly absorbed by the dark pigment (melanin) present in the hair follicle and shaft. The energy from the laser causes the hair to heat up and causes thermal damage to the hair and the surrounding structures responsible for hair growth; the bulb, bulge and vascular supply to the hair.
How many sessions will I require?
Multiple sessions are required at regular intervals due to the natural growth lifecycle that hair follows.
All of the hairs on your body follow a lifecycle which consists of a growth phase (Anagen), a transition phase (Catagen) and a resting phase (Telogen), before the hair eventually falls out and growth starts again (see diagram).

Laser hair removal is only effective when the laser energy reaches hair follicles that are in the growing (Anagen) phase of development. This is because the laser energy needs to be absorbed by the hair to the full depth of the follicle where it can cause the most damage to the surrounding structures responsible for hair growth. At any given time only a fraction of your hairs will be in the growth phase where the laser is most effective, so multiple treatments are required to ensure that all of the hairs in the area get treated when they are each in the anagen phase of growth, resulting in a long-term reduction of hair growth in the area.
The table below can be used as a rough guide to how many treatments it will take to complete a course of treatment. Patients with darker skin generally require more sessions due to the increased skin pigment (melanin) present in the skin surrounding the hair. This makes it harder for the laser to distinguish between the melanin present in the hair follicle and the melanin present in the surrounding skin, so lower energy settings have to be used to reduce the risk of side-effects and to safely remove any hair.
